'The Game & The Illusion'

PRIVATE VIEW:
Friday 16th October 2009
Shed and a Half Space
150 Curtain Road
London EC2A 3AR

‘The game and the illusion’ remain alive, the feeling is the same, the flame keeps the vibe and the vice, the bubbles abruptly come to surface and then I float.

This work especially prepared for the ‘Shed and a Half
’ space in East London, presents Alessandra Rebagliati’s new video and 2 large size prints.
During the past months she has completed this project she developed after a
visit to Lima Peru where she spent several days in the southern district of Punta Hermosa, 45 km from the capital. She encountered a group of school children during their daily outdoors activity and with permission from their tutor was able to photograph and register their actions during the half hour they spend daily in contact with nature in the most spontaneous way.

Showing this group of children from a
remote village in Peru during their timeout in such a privileged environment Alessandra Rebagliati wants to highlight how random things are happening all over the world all the time while we eat, sleep or just go on with our lives there’s some amazing other reality, overwhelmingly different, or completely opposite from the world’s in which inhabit the very people that are possibly reading this lines or watching this work.

Paradise can be found around the corner or thousands km away. In the first world people seem to be ready to go through all the hassle to get there. All dressed uniformly in red outfits these kids enjoy by their own right of birth such a
desired spot without even grasping what kind of future in this world, awaits for them, displaying the innocence reflection of their pure souls, that ignore the huge gap that exists in far away worlds, their small minds can’t even start to grasp there’s so many worlds between reality’s, just to think about it, feels like vertigo….

She says about her printed images: ‘By obscuring the brilliant reality in which the situation occurs I am trying to point out how blind we sometimes choose to be towards the future’s generations well being, by not taking into account how the selfish decisions we are making today will affect and
blur or obscure their chance of a better future’

video 'this is not a love song'; Mental Landscapes

ADENTRO: Cuando la mirada refleja

ADENTRO: Cuando la mirada refleja

A Constantino Carvallo

PAISAJE 1: Mirar adentro.

INSIDE: When the glance reflects

To Constantino Carvallo

LANDSCAPE 1: Inside glance. Mental Landscapes is the title for Alessandra Rebagliati’s first solo show at Galeria Vertice, Lima Peru. As a whole the work presented requires an exercise of contemplation, a fixing of a solitude glance. The senses to which this perspective alludes, refers to the experiences of exile and uprooting.

The writings on the skin of anonymous bodies in contemplating attitude describe symbolic projections of poetical achievement, that mediate between reality and the artist’s imagination.

TIME. This portraits could be describe as “vanities’, because they situate us in front of the world in solitude, alluding in this way the temporal inherent dimension of our existence. Death as the only certainty is present in each of the portraits. Here the references to the romantic paintings from Caspar Friedrich are pertinent, “Woman in Front of the Setting” and “The Wanderer above the Mists” (1818). By taking up again the portraits backwards in front of nature from Friedrich’s work, Alessandra is driving us to an identification by alterity: take the place of that other who is staring at us from the back, who is not looking at us. We glance the landscape through the character and we reflect ourselves in that landscape by touching their skins with our eyes. The landscape becomes the unbreakable projection of our emotions. We are then in a dual position of power and vulnerability.

IDENTITY. Solitude is exposed from a “pure” glance that stares in a long and fixed way; a universal and specific experience at the same time. Each phrase written have a reason and a chance of being, they refer to the making of conscious experiences turned into languages, symbols. The back turned individual, submerged in contemplation, discovers it’s identity in the writing which marks its skin; total, sensitive, limited with a past, empty, full of ideas.

LANDSCAPE 2: Outside glance. The free or interrupted horizon from the Lima coastline appears as a territory where the artist rewrites her history, her past, and her own identity. Why is she staring from the outside? Because she lives abroad from Lima. Then her glance is foreigner and has belonging at the same time. Her eyes reflect her uprooting. The dry hills from the coast are invaded by the modernity of the electrical TV towers; the urban landscape appears hostile and contaminated by architectures and technological networks. The old doors where a young adult plays to open and close them, describe a feeling of nostalgia and also a passing condition of a traveller, a migrant. The monumental from the ‘Rebagliati Hospital’ is situated in this poetically configured city by Alessandra’s horizon. The city is herself, now.

At this point her perspective, which apparently was neutral, becomes corporeal and adopts the grey entity, which accepts her. From the sky and the sea that freezes her gaze and blurs it.
